Ranking Questions

Ranking Questions

   – In ranking questions, you’ll be required to arrange five answer options in order of appropriateness, from the most appropriate to the least appropriate, for each scenario. There are three possible formats for these questions:

     – Rank the appropriateness of actions in response to a scenario (1= Most appropriate; 5= Least appropriate).

     – Rank the importance of different factors to consider when managing a situation (1= Most important; 5= Least important).

     – Rank the appropriateness of various verbal responses to a situation, assuming they are expressed politely (1= Most appropriate; 5= Least appropriate).

  • This type of question is usually marked using a keyed response mark scheme – the total marks awarded for an answer depends on how close the answer is to the “best response” or “model” answer, as determined by a panel of experts. This means that a sensible answer that is not perfect will still receive a high score.

Example:

Question:

You are currently four weeks into your placement with the Health Protection Team. In your previous placement, you primarily worked independently. However, in this new team, tasks are distributed among team members under the leadership of the team consultant. You’ve noticed a high level of engagement and task-sharing among team members. Despite this, you are worried that since joining this placement, you’ve been working in isolation, and there seems to be less interaction with you compared to the interactions among other team members.

Rank in order the following actions in response to this situation.

1= Most appropriate

5= Least appropriate

Answer:

a. Communicate any difficulties you’re facing with the tasks you’re working on to the entire team.

b. Seek guidance from the team consultant on strategies to foster better engagement within the team.

c. Let your team members know that you are available to assist if they require help.

d. Notify the team consultant about the lack of engagement from other team members towards you.

e. Persist in independently completing your work.

Explanation:

Adjusting to a new team can pose challenges for a newcomer as they navigate the team dynamic and work styles. This period of adaptation may lead to a sense of isolation. However, developing the ability to work effectively in a team and adapt is crucial. Identifying the right person and conveying concerns in a respectful and constructive manner becomes essential.

– **Option B:** This is the most suitable choice as it demonstrates the recognition of the appropriate individual to discuss the issue with, in this case, the team lead. Addressing the team lead is particularly fitting in a new team context, as they are familiar with their team and can assist in responding to the issue. The response reflects initiative, a polite communication style, and an intention to actively resolve the problem.

– **Option A:** This is a fitting response as it involves making an effort to engage more with the team instead of maintaining isolation and working independently. By sharing challenges, you directly inform the team about the issues.

– **Option C:** While somewhat appropriate, it falls short of directly addressing the feeling of exclusion from the group. The team might not be aware that you perceive a lack of engagement compared to their interactions with each other.

– **Option D:** This is not a suitable response as it directly communicates feelings but may be perceived as placing blame on team members. It also lacks clarity regarding a desire to resolve the issue.

– **Option E:** This is the least appropriate response as it does not address the issues or contribute to improving communication or teamwork within the team.
